ResMed Masks

The mask is one of the most critical components of the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) systems used to treat sleep apnea, playing crucial roles in the comfort and effectiveness of the equipment. That’s why ResMed Corp., a leader in the industry, offers a lineup of more than two dozen styles -- one for nearly every need and preference. Indeed, ResMed masks run the gamut: There are nasal pillows and vented nasal masks, vented full masks and nonvented masks, masks for children and those for people who have been hospitalized.

Sleep apnea occurs in many people as the muscles in the upper airway relax with the onset of sleep, making it more difficult to breath. The problem can lead to severe snoring and constant sleep disruptions. The CPAP machine reduces those symptoms by delivering enough air pressure to the airway to keep it open and ease breathing.

Getting a good seal around the mask is key for the CPAP system to work as it should. And since the user wears a mask during sleeping hours, comfort is crucial to getting a good night’s sleep, too.

ResMed has gained a reputation of high quality, high performance and supreme comfort. The company’s nasal pillow systems -- there are five models, including two specifically designed for women -- feature lightweight, unobtrusive masks. You can even wear glasses while wearing the nasal pillows.

The choice of mask is a matter of personal perference, and a matter of how you breathe while sleeping. Those who breathe through their nose can use nasal pillows or a nasal mask, which covers only the nose and is often perceived as less obtrusive. ResMed has eight types of vented nasal mask -- one of them made for women -- and a non-vented nasal mask.

For those sleepers who often breathe through their mouth or allow air to leak through the mouth, there’s the vented face mask. Because it covers both the nose and mouth, the face mask will prevent the air loss that will reduce the effectiveness of the CPAP treatment.

Which one is most comfortable? It depends. Some people find the nasal masks more comfortable while others prefer the face masks. Whatever the preference, each ResMed mask uses a cushion that inflates to create a floating -- and comfortable -- seal.

ResMed manufactures more than two dozen masks. They include:

Swift LT

Swift LT -- Because it weighs only 2.3 ounces -- or 67 grams -- this nasal pillow model has no forehead support. It features a rotating barrel that allows for a customized seal and easy fit. Plus it's as quiet as a whisper. The company says the Swift LTare the quietest nasal pillows on the market.

Swift LT for Her -- This ResMed mask has all the features of the Swift LT model, but also includes soft wraps to cover the headgear stability arms. Not only do the covers make the mask more comfortable, they also reduce the possibility of facial marks. The mask frame is also 50 percent smaller, making it easier to sleep on your side.

Swift FX -- Another nasal pillow model that has a minimal design, making it easy to forget that you’ve got it on. The ultra-soft fit helps the user to get a sound night’s sleep.

Swift FX for Her --This version is more streamlined and lighter, and the sizes are designed to better suit females. Like the Swift LT for Her, this mask comes with soft wraps to protect the face from creases, and the backstraps come in a choice of pink or light blue and gray.

Mirage Swift II -- These nasal pillows offer a clear field of vision, as well as a light, flexible system that vents air quietly -- ResMed says it’s 86 percent quieter than the Swift 1 -- away from both the patient and the person lying next to him or her in bed.

Mirage FX -- Nine out of 10 users fit into the standard Mirage FX, but for those who need a wider fit, another mask can accomodate. The Mirage FX Wide features a bigger frame and cushion width, as well as a cushion that is shallower for flatter nasal bridges.

The mask has ResMed’s top cushion technology, ensuring a good seal. The forehead support features flexible pads and the headgear allows for one-time fittings.
